Sad. I drove Beetles for over 25 years. From a 1963 cabriolet, two 1965 40 HPs, and THREE 1973 Super Beetles.
Then, Diesel golfs and dashers.
I performed ALL of my own work. Self reliance!! Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo were NOT fooling around!
Self Reliance is the cure for all that ails humans. To bad self reliance seems no longer possible. Can you repair your cell phone? Your PC? Even autos no longer have carburetors and distributors.
The feeling of rebuilding your carburetor and that improvement in the car’s performance felt wonderful.
The Book, “How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive; —A Manual for The Complete Idiot” (1969 edition), allowed me to maintain my Volks. Next, it taught me the basics of auto repair on any internal combustion engine.
In a larger sense, it taught what Good Karma is. Decency. Knowledge. Honesty. Kindness. Fun (harmless and how to avoid the other kind). This book made Zen look like an “also ran”.
There was nothing better than working on my 1963 cabriolet (a rust bucket!) in the summer sun and finishing with a cold beer.
I believe this bus was at least partially air cooled? Alas, it bears little resemblance to the older, classic VW Bus that was truly wonderful. Even the sound of a healthy VW was a great sound. It meant you had safe heat in the winter! —Nothing like that sound.
I even solved the mystery of the 6 Volt light dimming (general voltage drop at idle). It took me years to solve this for ALL 6 Volt VWs. But solve it , I did. It is an easy, dirt cheap, fix if anyone remains interested?
Alas, My best time was spent in, or working on an old Volkswagen. EI even droce the early diesels. Darn easy to maintain. Make sure you do not buy one made in the USA!
